Gemstones, and gemstone malas, can be helpful in the practice of planetary and attunement and planetary remediation, which I will discuss in a little more detail below.
In western (Alexandrian) astrology, we have the practice of using stones and herbs (see Stars and Stone: A Magical Lapidiary by Peter Stockinger) for planetary attunement. The idea is that certain stones resonate at a similar to the individual planets and can help as you pay your weekly respects to the planet (attunement as described by Austin Coppock in Understanding Planetary Days, Nights, and Hours. Offerings, petitions, prayers, and tasks that fall under the domain of a planet are best done in at the planet's day or night, and hour. This is not to say that other times won't work -- most favorable does not mean all other times are unfavorable. Repetition practice also increases one's chances of success.
I like to pair daily religious practice (sadhana) with offerings and petitions made in the correct planetary hour. Below follows a list of gemstones and their planetary correspondence for spiritual practice and attunement. I present these in what is called Chaldean order: Saturn to Moon.
Onyx, Obsidian, Blue or black Sapphire, tourmaline. I like obsidian, especially if you want to invoke Saturn's cooling and slowing powers. Onyx might be better if your intention to fulfill or fortify boundaries for protection. Saturn can be cold, heartless, cautious, slow to trust. Once committed, Saturn stands by his children. Offerings and activities include black and dark materials, feeding crows, winding clocks, donations to the homeless, people on the edge of society, people who are depressed and hopeless, the unwanted, those who are injured or need to honor a loss, hospice.
Lapis lazuli, Citrine, Yellow Sapphire, amethyst. sodalite. Jupiter is the greater benefic and its gifts are many. Expansion, abundance, wealth, good will, growth, progress, spiritual connections, learning, teaching. Offerings and ativities are just what you would think: donations in general but especially teachers, spiritual mentors, educational institutions and libraries.
Bloodstone, dark Ruby or garnet, lava, hematite, iron. Mars is the lesser malefic -- and by malefic, I don't mean to attribute unfriendly intentions. Malefic means more that Mars energy can be difficult for some to experience. Mars is passionate, fast, forceful, productive, impatient, competitive, and likes to win. Tempered with Jupiter, this is a great combination. Offerings and activities include donating to veterans and in support of soldiers, athletes (including Special Olympics)
Bright Ruby, sunstone, gold in all its colors. Sol, with the moon, are the two lights. As the giver of light, Sol brings health and healing, life force, warmth, and renewal. But the sun is not a benefic like Venus and Jupiter. It is not difficult to overdo the Sun -- with the expected burns, evaporation of water, and the turning of the spiritual and emotional landscape in a desert. Early morning practice with the sun is usually best, when its rays are yet gentle. The mid-day Sun can be of great assistance for issues of congestion, such as a cold, or bronchitis, however, or a depression. Offerings include ambers, and bright flowers, and donations to health care organizations.
Diamond, malachite, crystal, rose quartz, blue kyantite, copper. As the lesser benefic, Venus brings comfort, love and romance, luxuries, beauty, poetry music, and the arts, the good life, lazy summer days and cuddly winter nights. Productivity is not her strength but she will enjoy what you've produced. Offerings includes perfumes, flowers especially orchids, art projects, donations to artists, poets, and musicians, and organizations that support them.
Opal, labradorite, amazonite, but also many-colored shells such as abalone, Roman glass, and Parad metal (a combination of solidified Mercury with silver - not for homes with children). Mercury governs communication and business, where the rapid exchange of information and money determine success. But Mercury is the messenger who delivers messages across the nine worlds. Mercury also facilitates communications with those who have passed on and one's ancestors. Mercury is the patron and guardian of children. Offerings and donations include: Children's books, public libraries, child protective services and organizations that support early childhood education, respect for one's ancestors, setting up an ongoing donation from one's business.
Pearls, including black pearls, moonstone, seashells, and reflective stones and metals. Stones tumbled by the sea and small river rocks. Selenite and sea salts. The Queen of the Night, the darkness out of which worlds are formed. She is the nourishing mother who provides the milk of life as she waxes and the harsh lessons we need to learn to keep us safe when she wanes. Offerings and donations include gifts and respect for mothers, organizations that protect the sea and inland waters and her creatures.
